Florence , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into photography began when my son, Dominick, was just three months old. I purchased a camera and started capturing moments with him, and the compliments I received fueled my passion. I then began photographing my friends’ children, which further ignited my interest in this art form.
Eager to learn more, I enrolled in an online photography course and became particularly intrigued by wedding photography. To gain experience, I second-shot for a friend who is a professional photographer, and I absolutely loved the atmosphere and energy of those events.
As I honed my craft, I started receiving more bookings for family and senior portrait sessions. After a year or two of building my portfolio, I decided to invest in a high-quality camera and lenses. Fast forward to today, and I am proud to say that I have been running my photography business for over 11 years, capturing cherished memories for families and individuals alike.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth. One of the significant challenges I’ve faced is securing consistent bookings, particularly during the winter months here in northern Minnesota. The demand fluctuates greatly; some years, I might have only 4 to 5 weddings, while in others, I could have as many as 13 to 15. This variability can be tough, but it has taught me resilience and the importance of diversifying my offerings to maintain a steady flow of work throughout the year.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in capturing heartfelt moments, primarily focusing on family and wedding photography. Over the years, I’ve built strong relationships with my clients, many of whom have become good friends. I take pride in creating a warm and enjoyable atmosphere during shoots, which helps everyone feel comfortable and relaxed.
What sets me apart from others in the industry is my commitment to providing a quick turnaround for sneak peeks—usually the very next day. This allows my clients to relive those special moments almost instantly, which I know they appreciate. Ultimately, it’s the connections I make and the joy I bring to my clients that I am most proud of.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
While I don’t necessarily consider myself a traditional risk-taker, I believe that pursuing your passions is essential. If you feel strongly about something, I encourage you to go for it. Investing in yourself and your future is crucial, whether that means upgrading your equipment, taking workshops, or exploring new areas of photography.
The willingness to step outside your comfort zone—whether it’s experimenting with new styles or taking on challenging projects—can lead to personal growth and unexpected opportunities. Embracing what you love can be a rewarding journey, even if it feels a bit uncertain at times.
