Meet Holly Kragthorpe-Shirley of Sidekick for Good

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Kragthorpe-Shirley.

Hi Holly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story began in a family that opened our home to foster care, so from a young age I saw both the brilliance of young people and the ways that systems can fail them. That experience shaped me deeply and inspired me to become a classroom teacher, where I spent 14 years working directly with students and families.

Teaching gave me a front-row seat to the incredible talent and thoughtfulness of young people, the dedication of high-caliber educators, and the entrenched structural barriers that get in the way of opportunity. Over time, I felt called to move beyond the classroom and into education policy, where I could help address some of those barriers at the systems level.

That work eventually expanded even further. I began to see how the same patterns show up across sectors: in education, foster care, housing, philanthropy, advocacy, nonprofit leadership, and civic life. Today, my work is about helping leaders, organizations, and electoral candidates strengthen the systems, strategies, and relationships they need to create meaningful change.

The throughline has always been the same: a deep belief in my community and a desire to make systems work better for the communities they are meant to serve.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like many people, I’ve had to learn while building. One of the biggest challenges of our business has been moving from a founder-driven model to a more sustainable structure with clearer systems, team roles, boundaries, and decision-making practices. My business Sidekick for Good (SFG) works alongside incredible leaders and organizations that are trying to move deeply entrenched systems, and that kind of work requires real fortitude. A strength and challenge of the business is that we often see the path forward quickly, but sustainable change is deeply relational, and deeply relational work is often slow. Learning how to honor that pace while still helping clients build momentum has made SFG stronger, more focused, and more grounded in its values.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sidekick for Good?
Sidekick for Good is a social impact consulting practice that helps mission-driven organizations move from idea to action with more clarity, alignment, and momentum. We work with nonprofits, civic institutions and community-rooted leaders on strategy, fundraising, communications, project management, and systems-building. A lot of our work sits at the intersection of big vision and practical execution. We help leaders name where they are trying to go, translate that into a fundable and actionable plan, and build the tools, language, relationships, and internal systems to move the work forward.

A common example of work is an organization that reaches out because they are doing powerful work, but everything feels scattered. They may have a big funding opportunity coming up, a new program they need to launch, a founder or executive director who is holding too much, or a team that needs clearer priorities and roles. We help leaders slow down just enough to be able to zoom out and gain perspective that helps them get more focused, organized, and intentional. That might mean shaping the strategy, building a narrative, creating a funder plan, facilitating planning sessions, setting up project trackers, or helping the team decide what matters most right now. Our goal is to turn the swirl into a clear path forward.

What sets SFG apart is that we are strategic, practical, and deeply human. We are not just writing proposals or creating plans that sit on a shelf. We help leaders make sense of complexity, untangle competing priorities, clarify decision-making, and communicate their work in a way that funders, partners, and communities can understand. We specialize in supporting organizations that are doing systems-change work, especially in education, foster care, housing, civic engagement, youth leadership, advocacy, and community wellbeing.

Brand-wise, I am proud to consistently hear from people that Sidekick for Good feels relational and values-aligned. We are not trying to be the hero of anyone else’s story. We are here to be a trusted partner, a pattern-noticer, a strategist, a writer, a project manager, and sometimes the person who can help a leader breathe long enough to see the next right step. Our best work happens when we help brilliant people and organizations become more focused and sustainable without losing the heart of why they started.

How do you think about luck?
I have been lucky to meet lots of generous people who opened doors, made introductions, trusted me before I had a perfect portfolio, and helped me see possibilities I might not have seen on my own. I am lucky to get to work with leaders and organizations whose missions have stretched me, taught me, and helped Sidekick for Good become clearer about the kind of work we are meant to do.

And candidly, some of what may look like luck from the outside has also come from paying attention, staying in relationship, doing good work, and being ready when an opportunity appeared. So much of our business has grown through trust, referrals, and timing. The luck was in the connection, but the sustainability came from showing up well once the door opened.
