Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Boyles.
Hi Jen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Yes! My whole story revolves around content. We all know content is almost annoyingly prolific now, but growing up in ’90s monoculture was another story: We all watched, read, and discussed topics as they unfolded in real time, together. This afforded pretty rare opportunities to writers, critics and editors, and I became all three at age 21.
Rising in the ranks at various newspapers and magazines over the years, digital media took hold and I watched with great interest how people became brands, writers and reporters in their own right, consuming AND creating. It was obvious social media would be the future of content, so after a 6-year stint at a large advertising agency in the Twin Cities, I started my own social media agency, Jen Boyles Digital.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been much easier than expected due to the demand for all things social. One of the hardest things is knowing when to scale up and let go as a business owner. I’m trying to get out of the driver’s seat more and remind myself, “just because you can do it all doesn’t mean you should.” Balance, especially in this industry, is elusive.
We’ve been impressed with JBD / Jen Boyles Digital, so for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
JBD is a collective of experts who aim to cut the fat from the typical agency-brand relationship and deliver work (and attention) clients deserve. We’re laser focused on efficiency and effectiveness and represent a new agency model that doesn’t require 20 people in a meeting. Better work, less stress, more fun. We specialize in building brands through social media, digital content, design, and strategy, with clients ranging from big CPG brands to smaller B2B companies, and fellow agencies needing specialized support. We are proudly women-owned and led, and work with people from all walks of life.
What matters most to you?
Empathy. It’s key in almost anything and is important in being a good person and great service provider. Put yourself in the shoes of your audience, your clients, your loved ones and even adversaries and you’re likely to not only get an optimal outcome but build better relationships.
