Hi Jennie , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Here at the peoples closet we believe that Fashion is culture and culture is meant to pass down and around! The Peoples closet is the longest unincorporated mutual fund that Was birthed out of the 2020 Uprising and Protest! ( almost five yrs later we still stand) Mutual aid is a voluntary exchange between equals, which is why we established the ” No Dignity ” Policy which means if i wouldn’t put it on my body I won’t allow someone else to put it on theirs! So we ask that the donations be clean and or freshly washed, in wearable condition ( no stains, holes/ tears , working zippers and buttons)etc , and we try to keep things as seasonally appropriate as possible!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a mutual aid network takes time and Humility. You have to be willing to take a step back and recognize that good intentions aren’t enough, and building trust in a community requires consistency and reliability . Make sure that you’re truly give something safe, sanitary and sustainable.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Fashion Designer by trade! I Make , garments and patterns as well as fashion images and run a free mutual aid closet . i’m inspired by afrofurtuism and upclying! fashion fashion is the number one contributors to Climate Change and child labor. I wanna bring back slow Fashion and let people fall in the with are of garment construction and Buying new things out what already is so we can stop all of the wast and pollutions that takes place in these sweat shops that make plastic dress that will last 5 wears before you’re forced to buy a new one over and over spending 3 times a such in clothes even those the clothes are cheaper then ever!
