Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Sadergaski.
Hi Jesse, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
After getting my cosmetology license, I did it all. I dabbled in hair, nails, eyelash extensions, and so many more things. However, while you’re doing it all you kind of lose sight of what really matters to you. In the hair community, I have always noticed even as a young girl a disparity. In many salons, people with curly hair have to specifically request a stylist who knows how to “deal with” curly hair.
In cosmetology school, curly hair is talked about significantly less than straight hair – and when it is talked about, it is often about how to manage, straighten out, or tame curls. I don’t want that! I want every person with curly hair to love and appreciate their beautiful curls rather than feel like it is a burden. Because of this, I decided to transform myself into being a curl specialist.
Now I get to help clients of all ages embrace their curls and learn more about themselves.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To say that my journey has been a smooth road would be a lie. I faced quite a bit of criticism for “restricting” myself to only focusing on the curly community. I too at times felt like maybe I was causing myself more harm than good by focusing only on curls.
In such an inconsistent business in the beauty world, it is easy to become discouraged and even feel like giving up.
However, once you notice such a large need in a community you belong to, it is impossible to leave others behind.
Seeing clients be brought to tears after finally loving and accepting their natural hair makes every hardship I have faced worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
People think of me as their Midwest curly sister or bestie, whom you can ask all your hair care questions and never feel judged, but also as someone who shapes, and styles, each client’s God-given curls!
As a matcha lover who unashamedly indulges at local coffee and tea shops, I get approached all the time about my curls. I deeply empathize with the many curl stories & struggles (butchered haircuts, hair changes more than the seasons, terrified of trusting stylists, feeling like curls aren’t as beautiful as straight hair, struggling to find the right products…THE LIST GOES ON AND ON).
While most stylists/curl specialists may give you a good sense of knowledge and styling your curls, I see my position a bit differently. I’ve learned no head of curls nor lifestyle is the same. It’s my duty to take my profession and step into your shoes to create a custom hair care experience that soli fits my client and my client’s hair needs. Rest assured that in my chair, a sense of relief will occur knowing your pattern, whether tight or loose, it’s in safe hands.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I think the biggest lessons I learned from Covid-19 are about flexibility and complacency. I think these two kind of go hand-in-hand but it is just so important to never get too comfortable.
I think a lot of us tend to get caught up in our daily routines which never really allows us to grow and improve. Being able to adapt and change with your environment is such an important skill to have and will lead to so much growth and learning.
