Meet Jessica Hein of Jessica Hein Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Hein.

Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After a 15-year long career in design and sales, I got the itch to do something else. I thought long and hard about where I was at in my career and what the next 15 years would look like. It had never really been my plan to go into business for myself, and honestly, it’s not something I thought would be possible, but the freedom and flexibility to create my own path was calling to me. This business started as a pipe dream for ‘someday’. Then it became something I was obsessed with. I started researching and thinking about how this could all work. Before I knew it, I was writing everything down, creating processes, a business plan, and building a website. After that, I gave myself a date to launch. Now it was becoming a reality. I decided it would be a 40th birthday present to myself. I was still working a full-time job when I started the business in 2023. I had planned to stay working there in some capacity while I worked on growing the business, but right away, I landed a few really great projects, which I am forever grateful for because they allowed me to quit my full-time job sooner than I had planned. It wasn’t easy. I was essentially working 2 full time jobs for about 6 months before I was able to quit. Ever since then, there has been no turning back! I have worked every day to improve, grow, and implement new strategies to keep my business going. It isn’t easy, but it is so incredibly rewarding!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For the most part, it has been a pretty smooth journey. My clients have been absolutely amazing and trusting. I’ve greatly enjoyed the projects that I have worked on, and I have strong processes in place to make sure that my clients have an exceptional experience. The biggest struggle for me, honestly, has been dealing with a bit of imposter syndrome. I tend to be really hard on myself, so I feel really intimidated at times and wonder if I’m good enough for this. But I have to remember that I must be pretty good if I’m making it happen every day!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I offer affordable interior design for homeowners who are planning a remodel in their home. A lot of permanent decisions are being made for these projects, and I want to be there to help you though it and make sure you get it right. I make the process of planning for your home updates and renovations easy and fun by taking the stress off of your shoulders and doing the leg work for you. The space I design for you will be unique to your needs and taste.

I specialize in designing kitchens, bathrooms, multi room remodels, reconfiguring rooms to add function, basements, and more. I work with homeowners who may already have a contractor or might be planning to do a lot of the work themselves. The design plan you receive from me will act as your roadmap to create on your own or hand to your contractor.

What I’d like readers to know is that my design services are accessible to any budget whether you’d like a little bit of help or a lot. If you are planning to do any major home project or remodel, I highly encourage you to seek the advice of an interior designer before getting started. I can help you organize your thoughts into an actionable plan, create a vision or 3D rendering, or help you full scale with every design decision and selection.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking- Find people who are in an adjacent field to yours and who are already working with your ideal client. For example- contractors, builders, and other tradespeople are a great network for me because we can work together on projects. Start a relationship with those people so you can be a referral source for one another. Create great relationships with your vendors. Be engaged in your community and take every opportunity to get your name out there. Be where your clients are, join the organizations, volunteer, mingle in your community. The more exposure you have, the more people will remember you.

Mentor- Find others that do what you do and who understand your journey. Share experiences and bounce ideas off of each other. Be a resource to each other. Search out someone who has a successful business that is similar to yours and who has been at it a while to see what they are doing. The more you learn about what others are doing in your field, the more you will start to figure out what does and doesn’t work for you. I don’t have a designated mentor, but there are quite a few professionals that I lean on to give and take advice from.
