Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalyn Wolf.
Hi Kalyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always loved documenting everyday moments. A big part of that is because of my dad. He always took our school pictures and was often taking videos and candid pictures of us playing and growing up. He loved making sentimental movies for friends and family with the content he had.
This inspired me to do the same. When I see people enjoying life or experiencing an important moment, I immediately reach for my camera. Looking at the moments I’ve captured makes me happy. A big change in mindset came when my dad passed away suddenly on August 1st, 2022. When we were making the photo board for his funeral, I realized I had taken a lot of the candid photos we used of him doing things he loved, like mowing the lawn, working as a machinist, participating in volunteer work, and playing the piano. I realized how important it is for us to have pictures of those things as we heal.
My amazing husband, Casey, got me a really nice mirrorless camera and lens as a gift after my dad passed away. He knew having a hobby that made me feel close to my dad would be helpful during the tough time ahead. Ever since then, I have absolutely loved learning new skills in association with photography. Casey told me that I could pursue photography as a business if I wanted and he would support me.
So that’s what I decided to do! I have never loved any other job this much. It’s hard starting a business, but if you have the motivation and support from others it can be so exciting! I love getting to help others by helping them to live in the moment without having to feel guilty about not capturing it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are so many aspects to a photography business that it can feel overwhelming at times.
Finding clients that align with my goals is at times a challenge as well. But I think one of the biggest struggles in this field is imposter syndrome. It’s easy to feel like I am not good enough and that I won’t be able to succeed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love capturing real moments and I feel like my background has given me the creative eye that helps me achieve that. I specialize in lifestyle portraits. These are really important for small businesses looking to build trust with potential clients. I also recommend couples and families have professional photos done every year – you don’t get those precious moments back.
I love working with people to help them feel more comfortable in front of the camera so that they can also take photos in their everyday life. I’m really proud of getting to help people see how amazing they are. Sometimes people will come in with the attitude that they know they are going to hate their pictures. It is so fun to help them see how choosing the right photographer can make a huge difference!
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I have learned that despite difficult circumstances it’s possible to start over and do something I love.
I have also learned that creating a custom experience for everyone I work with is important to me. I want my clients to have fun and feel comfortable and this drives how I shape my business.
