Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Morris.
Hi Karen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello, I am Karen from Karen Morris Millinery. I’m so glad to be back to Voyage Feature. My business has been growing up a lot since last interview. I’m still so excited that one of my hats was featured in the official Kentucky Derby Style Guide this year. I also hosted the first Derby Party ever and there were 150 people joined the party and raised money for “This Old Horse” organization who takes care of abandoned and retired racing horses.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think my career has been a smooth road, however, there is more competitions in our state. I think it is a good thing though because the competitions drive me to be excellent.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I learnt traditional skills of millinery from the mentors. I usually use straw, felt, silk, wire etc. to construct hats and headpieces for my clients. Since there’re more and more competitions in US, I decided to experiment some new materials, new structure to make hats and headpieces. I took classes of 3D designs, Sustainable materials, Textile Design and dyeing in Japanese ways. I also add some tools and equipments like 3D printer, Laser-print machine to prosecute my ideas.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think most people who knows me don’t know I studied Business and Administration in college and they don’t know I worked over than 15 years in business field. They all thought I studied Art and Design. =P
