Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Chelstrom.
Hi Kat, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since I was little, I’ve been drawn to creativity. Art was always my favorite subject in school, and I eventually earned my degree from the College of Design at the University of Minnesota. After spending a decade in commercial space planning and design, I found myself feeling burnt out and uninspired.
In 2023, I began working part-time with Studios Moss, collaborating on art installations for businesses and events across the Twin Cities. Studios Moss, owned by my creative mentor and now good friend, Suzanne Casler, became a turning point for me. Watching her boldly pursue her passions and build a career around them inspired me to do the same. By 2024, I had fully transitioned to working as a full-time artist.
I absolutely LOVE creating. My work is typically abstract—full of movement, bold color, and joy. People often ask what inspires me, and my most honest answer is gratitude. I am deeply thankful for my life and the incredible people who surround me, and that gratitude shapes every piece I make.
I’ve designed and completed murals for both commercial and residential spaces, transforming overlooked or unloved areas into vibrant, engaging environments. Beyond murals, I create acrylic paintings and digital art. I’m currently seeking collaborations with women-owned businesses and cannabis companies interested in featuring local artist work on their packaging. Whatever the medium or setting, my goal is always the same: to bring color, energy, and joy into the spaces we share.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today hasn’t been bumpy, exactly—but it’s certainly been far from linear. I’ve always known I wanted to avoid a traditional desk job, have flexibility, work with people, and use my creativity.
Along the way, I’ve battled imposter syndrome in the art world and questioned whether I could truly make a living doing what I love. I’ve taken many detours—into the airline industry, commercial design, even dabbling in construction—all while inching closer to what feels most “me.”
My path will continue to evolve, just as I will. But today, I’m confident I’m headed in the right direction: creating joyful work for people who, like me, are seeking more joy in their everyday lives.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a Minneapolis-based artist specializing in bold, abstract work that’s full of color, movement, and joy. I create murals, acrylic paintings, digital art, and interactive installations that transform spaces and spark connection. My work is known for its vibrant, uplifting energy and for turning overlooked or underutilized spaces into something unforgettable.
What sets me apart is my approach—I don’t create art in isolation. I work closely with clients and communities to understand their vision, values, and audience, so the end result isn’t just beautiful, it’s meaningful. Whether it’s a large-scale mural for a local business, an art installation for an event, or custom artwork for a product, I want people to feel welcome, inspired, and joyful when they experience it.
I’m most proud of my ability to infuse personality and positivity into every project while staying true to my own style. My brand is about more than just making something “pretty”—it’s about creating art that invites people in, reflects their story, and adds more color (literally and figuratively) to the world around them.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I love meeting new people, learning their stories, and creating something meaningful together. If you have a wall, a space, or even a product that could use more color and joy, let’s talk!
