Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Chipinski.
Hi Kate, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started with a house. We looked for years for a house on a lake. It needed to tick all of the boxes. We wanted to live on a lake, close to the city, with a great school district and community, and with great bones that we could work with. I ended up seeing our house with my kids while my husband was out of town on a work trip. We put an offer in without him ever seeing it. The house had excellent bones was well built but needed some TLC in the aesthetic department. So, we got the house, moved in and started fixing it up room by room. Someone told me to start posting what I do on Instagram and I thought, why not! It kind of snowballed from there. I was getting featured in different #feature groups which led to more people seeing me which led to sponsorships, collaborations, interviews, and articles.
I am an eco-friendly, DIY home renovator. I love working with all that I can in a space. Changing it to make it feel more modern but not producing a bunch of waste in the process. I also think it’s important to incorporate vintage and used items into each space. It offers a feeling of dimension and warmth. I want to show people that you don’t need to completely demo a space to modernize it. I want to show that used is cool and vintage is priceless. Love your home and the pieces in it and make it unique to you.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Is the road ever smooth, if it is, it’s a short road. You will always have ups and downs, it doesn’t matter who you are. Ride the highs while you can and endure the lows when they come, knowing that it won’t be that way forever. There are a lot of factors that are out of my control with what I do. I can’t control Instagram and how they choose to show me or not show me. That is probably the most difficult part of the journey. Working so hard transforming spaces, creating content to have it not be relevant in the algorithm.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an eco-friendly, DIY home renovator. I love keeping what I can in a space, giving away what I can’t use, and completely transforming a space. People are always asking me what my style would be called because it’s not what you see every day. I say its just me. I have a mix of a lot of different styles in my home. Mid century modern, rustic, modern, minimalist, vintage, masculine, etc. I try to stay true to my beliefs in what I think design should be. I consider it art. I want to create uniquely beautiful spaces that make your eyes and heart dance.
Any big plans?
I never know what I want the future to be. Besides design and renovation, I love helping people and immersing myself in social justice causes. If I could do a mix of these things I would be a happy woman. Maybe finding a building in our small town to renovate and make an Airbnb out of and volunteering for disaster relief services, blood drives, helping the underserved in the community, etc. That sounds pretty perfect to me!
Mike, my husband, and I have actually put an offer on a building in the heart of town but we didn’t get it. We are still in search of our perfect property in downtown Northfield. We also have renovations to do on our current house still.
