Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Johnson
Hi Kathleen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in the historical underground live music scene of Minneapolis . Every single venue in this scene has been gone for quite a while.
I had opportunity to work with and branch out to many working bands and live music projects including working directly at Paisley park and with Prince until he past away.
There is so much in between from 1989 working and touring with Billy McLaughlin group to starting my own band “BKS” and becoming a member of “The TC JAMMERS” and “The Soul Tight Committee”.
I stopped “Gigging” in 2009 and stared mentoring… developing a workshop called “Raisingthrbar, an Artist’s Loft” at the last club of it’s kind,,, Arnellia’s.
From there I moved on to being able to work in mainstream clubs like… MN MUSIC CAFE, BUNKERS, THE DAKOTA, CROONERS, CHANHASSEN DINNER THEATER Where I helped open doors for other up and coming musicians. This is what I still do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am a Black Women who often hires and leads Men,
It is difficult to be completely taken seriously. There are still many opportunities not available to minorities. I still can’t not get a gig at specific venues based upon my resume.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Professional vocalist who leads groups and live music productions.
I specialize in mentoring and sharing my stages with like minded talent .
I’m known for helping to prep air talent so that they can establish themselves in our live music community .
I’m proud to look back at the beginnings of my teachings that ultimately helped to build many musician’s resumes .
I am always helping, sharing and supporting other artists%
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I want to continue to teach what I know about live performance, putting together groups and bands, being a solo artist and how to be a expected independent artist ,
It is time to pass the torch.
