Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Aanerud.
Hi Kelsey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My makeup journey really started to grow during the shut down for covid back in 2020. While at home and actually having time to create looks I’ve always wanted to do, this was just a hobby that turned into something absolutely incredible. I’ve gotten a ton of work doing hair and makeup for photoshoots, film, weddings, etc. Makeup is my true passion, and my journey has just begun.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When it comes to creating, the only thing I struggle with is time. My family will always come first, then my salon, and then I create on my downtime. But I will say, my journey with my salon has slowed down so I can focus more on my makeup. It’s scary transitioning into a new career, but so exciting at the same time. I know this is my true path, and I can’t wait until it’s my main focus.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Powder Room is an independent salon owned by yours truly, Kelsey Aanerud. I started from zero when I first opened my salon with no clientele and very little money. The first two years were incredibly tough thinking I made a mistake, I should quit, or is this worth it?! The answer is, heck yeah it was! A client the other day said this to me word for word, “Can you really have an incredible income, flexible hours, and your dream job?” …I looked around my salon and said, “YES!” Of course you can! I struggled in the beginning, but I never gave up, and never slowed down.
The Powder Room is my greatest accomplishment in my career so far.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is truly making other people happy. The confidence I see in them once their look is complete is so incredibly rewarding. Living is about feeling happy, feeling beautiful, self care, overall good energy. I feel that good energy when my clients leave my salon looking radiant again. It’s the best reward.
