Meet Ken Nyberg of Duluth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Nyberg

Hi Ken , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From early on I knew I loved art but the question was always, how do I make a living from it? I began my design career doing posters for friends’ bands and small projects for family. I later got a quick degree in graphic & web design to prove to companies that I knew what I was talking about and have been a full time designer ever since. Aside from the corporate gigs I do freelance design on the side and have found a spot for myself in the niche outdoor and fishing market. The midwest has a thriving community of sportsmen and thanks to Instagram and word of mouth I’ve now worked brands from Minnesota to Australia.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For me the struggle came with finding my own voice and style. As a young designer you tend to follow trends and emulate your colleagues. It takes time to develop your own personal aesthetic but it’s more rewarding and you will find an audience if you’re consistently authentic.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve found my place in a niche market of outdoorsman and fisherman. My style leans vintage and rugged which really speaks to my clientele and more importantly their customers. The most rewarding thing for me as a freelance designer is return business, I’ve been working with a few companies for nearly 10 years now, so I must be doing something right. I’ve gotten to witness their fledgling business grow to becoming a leader in their market, I like to think I had something to do with that.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
During the pandemic I decided to start working fully remote for a new company. I put a lot of trust in this company but had a good feeling. As the breadwinner of my family its not something I take lightly. But remote or not as long as you keep communication open, stay on task and produce engaging content people will notice.
