Meet Kimberly Niosi of Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Niosi.

Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have had a love a passion for interior design actually, as far back as I can remember. My mother was an interior designer and artist and was classicly trained in oils. We traveled to Europe quite a bit and yes I was that kid that you could not get out of a museum ever. For me seeing the Acropolis, in Greece for the first time was life-changing. Touring across Italy at a young age was so immersive. I didn’t think I would become an interior designer at first I wanted to pursue business or law. As it would seem the longing for fine art and interior design would never leave it was just my calling. I have a degree in interior design and a bachelor’s degree in fine art. As far as how I got to where I am today I would have to say I strive to learn and work to better the lives of my clients through their environments. You see the interior design practice is much like an ever-ongoing learning process, there are new developments, new products, new greener, healthier products that you need to keep abreast of. It really is a practice, as you are always evolving and honing your skills.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh no it has not been easy, it is a lot of work and the ups and downs with the economy has a direct effect on interior design. People sometimes say to me I wish to be like you, you have such a fun job I chuckle. OH NO, IT’S WORK. I sometimes go on 2 or 4 hours of sleep, I can’t tell you when I had my last vacation. There are so many decisions, I may have approximately 50 to 100 decisions in just one shower alone times that by how many rooms, how many projects, and pretty soon you get the picture and yes infinite text messages and emails to get back to. some even at 3 am from a client wondering if they made the right decision on something it’s busy.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have done some amazing projects for NFL, NBA, and even some NDA clients in Miami, even the Grand Salon for the Pillsbury Castle ASID Showcase House. Making the cover of many design magazines, that is all so great and I really love the luxury sector of course. But something I was most proud of was working pro bono on a homeless shelter for a young woman that lost everything her parents, car, job, everything. I was able to take a very tiny space and create a mini luxury space for her. We layered the space and multi-tasked every piece of furniture and we gave her an opportunity to have something to inspire her to get back on her feet. I firmly believe “We create our spaces, after that, they create us” Kimberly Niosi I also firmly believe in empathetic design and quite honestly I am an advocate for incorporating it into the universal design principles. As we truly don’t know what others have been through in their lives. Design is so many things, it insprires, it functions, it’s pleasing, it creates health, happiness, and so much more.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I read a ton of books, yep pretty old school, and I love to travel. Travel is where I get most of my ideas.
