Today we’d like to introduce you to Leticia Meyer.
Hi Leticia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always wanted to have my own business, as a child I would make jewelry and go door to door and sell them. So I started out young knowing I wanted my own business. Skip forward to 2016, I was newly divorced, and single mother with little money. I went through a lot that year; including being diagnosed with bipolar disease. I, also, went back to school for beauty that year. I already had a business degree. Which I had never utilized, graduating at the height of the great recession and unable to find a job in my desired field. My plan was to go back to school and in five years run my own business. Five years later, here I am starting out on the next chapter of my life. It is terrifying and exciting at the same time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The universe seemed to come together. I started out working for a wonderful company. I couldn’t have made my dream come true without them. I owe a lot to Mark and Dan. When I decided to branch out on my own things have just seemed to fall into place.
We’ve been impressed with Letjoy Beauty Lash Spa, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed esthetician. I specialize in lash extensions, lifts, and tinting; as well as brow laminations and tinting. I am also an advocate for self care. My first job out of school was for a salon/ full service spa. I thought that was what I wanted to do with my career. There, I learned to do lashes and quickly fell in love with it. Moving forward, I went to work for Deka Lash, where I was able to learn and grow into my new passion. I liked the spa feeling, so I incorporate it into my business. Unlike other lash studios, I provide a relaxing setting to get your lashes done without outside interrupt. I know women, with or without, children do a lot. Women don’t usually put themselves first. Whether it’s taking care of your family, or taking care of your career women don’t let themselves completely relax usually. The women I have seen in the past would tell me that their lash refills, once every two weeks, was their only “me time”. I realized that even when we stop and close our eyes we still are “on” in our heads. So by incorporating a spa setting I encourage my clients to take that time for themselves. They can listen to a book on headphones or meditate listening to the spa music. If you are my client it’s your time to relax and take care of yourself.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
On a personal note, the obstacles I have overcome have been many and hard. I have bipolar, as I mentioned, but also have dyslexia/dyscalculia. Life has not been easy.
In 2010, my mother passed away unexpectedly. Three days before my wedding, one year before becoming a mother myself, I lost my mother.
In 2012, I came close to death, contracting a dangerous case of meningitis. The doctors weren’t sure if I would wake up, or if I would have brain damage, or other possible damage. I did suffer a Traumatic Brain Injury to my frontal lobe causing some short term memory issues that I struggle with daily.
In 2017, I suffered a mental health crisis. With hard work, a support system, medication, and therapy I was able to begin healing. Learning to live a healthy and happy life with my illness. Despite all obstacles, I was able to overcome. Finding a way to live a dream of doing what I love, while helping (in my way) my fellow humans.
**In the United States 2.8% adults suffer with bipolar disease. This illness has no cure but with medication and therapy people can lead healthy and prosperous lives.
