Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Buck.
Hi Lisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In the 90s, I was a young lawyer working long hours at a big firm in Mpls. My husband also worked a lot and travelled for business. So when we started a family, I decided to stay home. We had 4 kids in 5 years! That time was kind of a blur. As the kids were growing up, I went to a lot of their baseball games, football games, dance shows, piano recitals, and school plays. My father-in-law had given me an old Nikon that he no longer used and that camera came with me to every sports event and activity. As I captured my kids’ childhoods, I discovered that I enjoyed learning about the art of photography. I took a few photography classes and I belong to organizations for professional photographers, but mostly this is a self-taught craft.
Several years and cameras later, I started Lisa Buck Photography. My goal is to create authentic and compelling images. I provide headshots for professionals and portraits for couples, families and high school seniors.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Social media was, and continues to be, a thorn in my side. Posting regularly is a chore and I would prefer to live my life offline, but that is not the way the world works. Photographers, like many professionals, need to have a social media presence. So in 2019 I finally made the leap to social media.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love to create beautiful images of people. My focus is headshots and portraits. This summer, I will photograph a lot of seniors from the class of 2023, including my youngest child!
I am told that I make photo sessions fun, easy and painless for my clients. I think that is what sets me apart from other skilled photographers.
What I am most proud of is bearing witness to the lives of amazing people who have trusted me to capture an important moment in their life. From people starting their career or pivoting into a new field who need a headshot, to a mother diagnosed with ALS who wanted a portrait for her kids to remember her when she is gone. These are the moments that I am fortunate to be a part of.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I don’t have a mentor, but many people have helped me over the years. The Twin Cities Professional Photographers Association is a wonderful group of photographers. We meet monthly to learn from and encourage each other. It’s community over competition.
My kids were my first models and muses. When I want to experiment with new lighting equipment or a new posing technique, I usually try it out on them first if they are available (which isn’t often!)
My husband, a med-tech CEO, is my business advisor. He is wise and has a keen ability to think outside the box.
