Meet Marcie Rendon of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcie Rendon.

Hi Marcie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up reading anything and everything i could find. Started writing early (grade school) but no one told me i could grow up and be a writer. Starting writing full time to make a living in 1991. Everything from journalism, poetry, plays to now the crime novels. I got here by having good mentors and a dynamite writing group that meets monthly.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Two big challenges. 1) Being the primary support for daughters and grandchildren as a single mom, and 2) Grasping the business, money, side of being an author.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an author, playwright and poet. I am known for my Cash Blackbear crime series which features a Native American protagonist. Readers love Cash and are always asking, ‘when does the next one come out?” They are set in northern Minnesota so I also have a large rural readership. Most crime novels are set in big cities on the coasts and these books feature stories about rural, midwest folks.

I also encourage and support other women and native creatives to do their work – sometimes by mentoring, sometimes by advocating and sometimes by just pointing out resources.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I have my women’s writing group that meets once a month and i am a member of Sisters in Crime locally and nationally. I am also a member of Midwest Crime Writers. I am connected to a couple national Native writers groups. Connection with other writers who support each other I think is crucial to all our successes.
