Meet Mariah Diaz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Diaz.

Hi Mariah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?

Hi, I’m Mariah Diaz! I grew up in the foster care system in ten different foster homes. Graduated high school, I was the first and only person in my family who went to college. Soon after I began, I realized I didn’t want to be a dental hygienist. I worked and worked till I decided. It was time to go back to school for what I love to do which is hair.! I got my cosmetology certificate amidst a global pandemic. I decided I needed to choose very wisely about how I begin my career. I needed more education and got a part-time job. This company helped me gain my license to work in an actual salon, Shortly after I decided I wanted more from my career- more than just haircuts. So I started my own hair path renting a chair in the salon of my dreams!! Westside Haircare in Saint Paul. . I found my love for cosmetology in my first visit to this salon. I have been a long-time client of 16 years. It made sense to see if I could rent. I was hired and got a station. I’m set up for every Friday open to close. Renting one day to start and slowly working my way into a hybrid stylist. Two jobs. One business I am building. It’s my dream job and running my own business from behind the chair.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There was the global pandemic setting back payments to college tuition which delayed my ability to go to the state board testing. I could not get my license so I couldn’t get a job or rent,

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would consider myself a blonde specialist. I am most proud of my color and foiling techniques. The vibrant colors that can transform someone, it’s incredible.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Never stop learning. There are ten ways to get the same solution. Make room for space to grow.
