Meet Marina Pett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Pett.

Hi Marina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always wanted to do something creative but didn’t think I could make a career out of it. 7 years ago myself, my husband and our 3 kids moved to Minneapolis and I have finally realized what I wanted to do. I started cosmetology school and that was the best school experience I have ever had, because whatever I was studying I was passionate about. I still felt like I needed more training after I graduated so I found a salon that offered an apprenticeship. I was at Haus salon for 5 years assisting, going through their haircutting program and building my own clientele, This definitely gave me confidence in my skill and be able to work for myself. I started renting a chair at Cocoon a year ago and just love being on my own. It gives me freedom, financial security, and work/ life balance.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the hardest part was going back to school. I was older than a lot of the students but I kept reminding myself that I was there for education. It was hard being away from the kids but I have the best partner who has always been supportive and helpful. I still didn’t like being away from home and not until I started working and falling in love with my job, that I realized I was pursuing my dream and setting my kids an example of that. Being a working mom made me a better mom.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a haircutting specialist and I love what I do. I like cutting all hair and all hair texture. I am very passionate about finding the right cut, style and product for my clients. I love showing my clients how to do their hair at home and how to embrace/ and wear their natural texture, whether it’s straight or curly.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Continuing education and listening to my clients are crucial, in my opinion. I never want to stop learning and try my best for my clients to feel safe and comfortable in my chair.
