Meet Megan Hamilton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Hamilton.

Hi Megan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I initially moved to Minneapolis 13 years ago, I quickly found my way into the hip-hop scene. I was frustrated with the quality of beats a lot of my peers were buying from producers they didn’t know, and I resolved that I could probably figure out how to make my own beats.

As my affinity for music production grew, I attended some of the country’s largest festivals and eventually moved into the electronic music realm. Though my roots were based in trance and house, I found my way to future funk with the help of a few tasteful friends. I decided in 2015 that I would sign my first EP to Ghetto Funk, and things have only snowballed from there. Signing to Laidback Luke’s label, Mixmash was a moment that really brought it all full circle. I’ve had the opportunity to share the stage with some of my biggest influences and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think I’ll answer this one with my favorite quote.

“You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know.” – Daumal.

The show must go on.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’d say I’m most known for the deep cuts and remixes I play live, mainly the ones you can’t find anywhere outside of my sets.

I’m really proud of the music I’ve collected over the years, a lot of which has been pulled down due to copyright bullshit. Every set is just an impromptu throwdown of music that’s sparked joy for me over the last 15 years.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I don’t think I’ve ever registered “risk-taking” the same way most people do.

That word honestly only makes an opportunity more appealing to me. I believe other people might say that choosing this career was the biggest “risk” I’ve ever taken, but I definitely don’t view it that way.
