Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Nicholas.
Hi Michael, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Minneschlagen started on a napkin, during happy hour, surrounded by friends in Minnesota. The idea came from years of pounding nails into random logs, combined with the desire to start a business. Playing the game at the cabin was great, but we wanted to be able to bring the log with us so we could share the fun and excitement with friends and family. Hence, our first game the tabletop hammer and nail game, Minneschlagen. We recently launched Scharts in 2022 and the response has been nothing short of amazing. It’s also worth noting that we used a paper product to jot down our first idea. Now we have our Seed-to-Seed initiative and plant a tree for every Minneschlagen or Scharts set sold.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If you follow us on social media (and if you don’t, please do!), you’ll see we have a very light hearted approach to business. We try not to get to caught up in the setbacks and focus on what we can do to continue to bring people together to have fun. If there was a word “funtrepreneur” that is what we are. We have fun. If you say things like, “Show Off Your Schlag” “Schlag On” and “Scharts” you know you’re doing life right. And if you haven’t noticed, we like to make up words 🙂..
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are two couples that all work full time jobs and one who works overtime constantly, that role is a stay at home mom. We all have different backgrounds and viewpoints. In our meetings, often times around a bon fire or pontoon ride, we collaborate and strategize the “what’s next”. We are proud of what we have created. We haven’t focused on the dollar but our focus today is creating fun, laughs and bringing people together.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We don’t think people/Minneschlagen fans (who we call “Schlagers”) understand or realize the role they play in us continuing to press on!
All businesses and organizations face challenges and setbacks. We are no different. The hundreds, maybe even thousands of people that have given us a compliment at a trade show, an email stating how much they loved the product, sharing pictures playing our games or even something as simple as liking or sharing a social media post, it’s the small things like this that keep us going. In addition, there is a small business community in Minnesota that we are grateful for, we will continue to build these partnerships and add more. The people that we have met in the last 18 months since the start of our company have been the motivation to keep us going. Thank you Schlagers!

I first saw the Hammerschlagen people at WeFest about 20-years ago, then I moved to New York and see them out here at festivals once and a while. I heard they had a home kit, but didn’t know how to buy one. It’s great to see these two couples getting involved with the Hammerschlagen group, and I’m looking forward to playing with my miniature Hammerschlagen game!
