Today we’d like to introduce you to Nallely Cuevas.
Hi Nallely, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Nallely Cuevas, my family and I started a small business almost two years ago, named Sabor Nayarit. We have always wanted to have our own business as a family, and we saw this as an opportunity.
My family started doing fundraisers with other family members to help people in need that live in Nayarit and Guadalajara (Mexico) which is where we’re from. When the pandemic happened, my parents lost their jobs and I wasn’t working for other personal reasons, so we were trying to figure out a way make money in these hard times. My parents love to cook, and I have some experience in marketing and sales, so we then decided to start selling seafood dishes that are a bit hard to find here in Minnesota. We started selling our shrimp empanadas and ceviche Nayarit style. And thankfully they’ve been a hit. Our goal is to expand and hopefully open a small restaurant where people can continue to enjoy our food. We want to thank all our customers for their support.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe starting a small business always faces challenges especially during a pandemic. COVID 19 has made it tough, but it gave us that push to start our business. We’ve had many challenges but we as a family have always worked hard and pulled through together to get things done.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
If you ask around people will say we make one of the best ceviche (which is shrimp cooked in lime, with cucumbers, onions, and chili peppers to make it spicy). We also make shrimp empanadas which is a stuffed bread filled with shrimp, it also has a spice to it but not as spicy, so we make salsa on the side for them. For now, that is what we make, but we plan to add more items to our menu in the future.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Positive customer experience is the key, being friendly and approachable, always maintaining a positive attitude. Also, patience and determination, not giving up when we go through hard times.
