Today we’d like to introduce you to RiGBY.
We’re so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
RiGBY’s first show was on April 20th, 2019. The band didn’t begin with the intention of playing more than one show together. Their first show was a cover show at The Garage in Burnsville. Maude reached out to her future bandmates Kean, Hana, and Fay to ask them to learn some cover songs by the Minneapolis band Babes in Toyland. After performing on the garage stage the group of musicians realized they had a spark. The group sat down that night and set up an Instagram for RiGBY and went from there.
Over the next couple of years, the band started writing their own music and playing as many gigs as they could. Eventually, this led to them recording their debut album “We’re Dying” with local producer Benny Cole.
RiGBY is working on cementing their role in the Twin Cities DIY scene. They hope to help cultivate a scene where all are welcome to share and witness unique art.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When it comes to obstacles, for a band who started in Spring of 2019 the obvious answer is (of course) Covid.
RiGBY was lucky to be able to use their time during lockdown to record an album and build up their repertoire.
Outside of the pandemic, the band has always struggled with how to define themselves. It can be easy to get caught up in labels, especially with such a wide array of influences between the four members.
As they continue to grow as a band, RiGBY has learned to confidently call themselves punk, regardless of how others may try to define their art. Being comfortable with their own identity as a band is a constant struggle, but the group feels lucky to have a strong community of other artists that hold them up and remind them to do what makes them happy.
