Hi Samantha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I always strived to surround myself with positivity. My work. My friends. My hobbies. I was never 100% sure of what I “wanted to do when I was older,” but I knew I wanted to love whatever it was. In 2016, I moved from my home state of Michigan to Minnesota to be with my husband, Keith. My husband is a small business owner, and watching him gave me the confidence and knowledge to pursue my dream. Soon after my oldest was born in 2017, I decided to give that dream a shot, and my business, Gordon Design Co., was founded. Over the years, I have been beyond blessed by the growth and community I have gained, and I can proudly say I truly love what I do.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
The photography industry is heavily saturated, and I am so thankful for the support of my friends and family, especially as I was getting started. It took years of commitment and consistency to grow my “family” of clients. Learning the industry, refining editing techniques, and my passion for photography has truly been the slingshot to my current success. I have remained true to my style and values throughout the ever-changing “trends” and honestly believe my consistency and firm belief system has aided in the growth of my business. It is effortless to get caught up in the competitive nature of photography, but I actively choose community over competition and encourage other photographers to do the same.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Every session is unique, and our time together will be treated as such. Before being a full-time mom and photographer, I was a nanny for 10 years and was passionate about photographing families and weddings! I love getting to know my clients personally and customizing sessions based on personalities, comfort levels, and desired genre without sacrificing quality. During our time together, I use prompts to achieve natural movements and smiles that set my images apart from traditional posed portraits. I strive to capture memories, not just moments. I am proud of my dedication to growing my knowledge in an industry of ever-changing programs, gear, and trends industry. Being in an interracial relationship myself, I understand the importance of skin tones and always make them my top priority. I want each individual captured to look like themselves, and I am thankful for the knowledge and commitment to making this happen. Lastly, affordability was one of the most important values when creating my business. I truly believe every family, no matter your budget, is deserving of quality images sure to last a lifetime. In addition to my regular session packages, I offer discounted mini sessions multiple times throughout the year. I love continuing my tradition of “pay what you can” photo sessions each fall.
