Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Cassavant
Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Sarah Cassavant, and I run a small quilting business in St. Paul called Stone Fruit Creative. I make unique and functional quilted clothing and accessories, and I do all of the patchwork, construction, and quilting myself.
I’ve always been a maker, and Stone Fruit Creative was born in 2023 as a way for me to continue my quilting practice while sharing my art with others. My mom and my aunt taught be how to quilt at a young age, and it brings me so much joy to share my skills and introduce quilted goods to new audiences.
Quilting holds such deep memories, and I love when someone sees my work and tells me a story about how their grandmother used to quilt, or how my work inspires them to pick up sewing again. Stone Fruit Creative is a business, but it’s also my way of being a steward of the art of quilting and showing people it can be fun and fresh while still honoring tradition.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running a small business definitely isn’t a breeze every day—especially since I have a full-time job in addition to running Stone Fruit! It can be a challenge to carve out time for all of the admin that goes into running a business, but that work is crucial in making this a successful and sustainable business. I’m lucky to have wonderful friends and colleagues in this space who I can turn to for advice!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in quilted goods, specifically accessories and clothing. I do all of the patchwork, construction, and quilting myself, and each item truly is unique and made with joy.
Two of my most popular items are the quilt block sweatshirts and jackets, and they’re fun for me to make because I get to experiment with different colors and patterns. Plus, they’re a great way to give new life to old garments.
I’m proud of all of my work, but I especially love my Picnic Totes. I freehand cut all of the fruits and veggies and then appliqué them to the tote panel, and they’re all slightly different and very playful. I love seeing the joy on people’s faces when they see the bags at my table at markets. They definitely grab attention!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The easiest way to support Stone Fruit is to follow along on Instagram and to find me at markets! I participate in a variety of maker’s markets throughout the year, but currently you can find me as a winter vendor at Mill City Farmer’s Market. I always keep my upcoming market dates up to date on my website and social media, and I’m available for select commissions if you can’t make it out in-person.
