Today we’d like to introduce you to Shakia Davis
Hi Shakia , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hair is something I’ve always done since I was a little girl, in school I always did my friends hair in class, at basketball games and after school when we would hang out! After graduating high school I ended up going to cosmetology school and got my license at the age of 20. I worked at a few shops, I opened my first salon suite at the age of 22, my business started to take off and I’ve gained over 800+ clients. I’ve been flown out to LA/ New York to work on music video sets, commercials and magazines with music artist. I met and worked with celebrities, I took classes from some of the best in the hair industry, I’ve worked with major hair companies as a brand ambassador and now I have a salon suite downtown Minneapolis where I service clients that have been with me since the beginning of my journey!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I first started I had 1-2 clients a week, the hard part was sticking to it and not giving up. Questioning if this is what I really want to do and is it worth fighting for. I also had 2 children during my journey so balancing being a mom and full time hairstylist definitely had its challenges.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a hairstylist, I specialize in wigs. Installing wigs, customizing them and making them appear as natural as possible! I’m most proud of how far my work has come, how much confidence my clients have in me and my work. I love empowering woman and making them feel and look beautiful even when they come in at a low point in their day/life watching them glow after their hair is done makes my job so much more rewarding. What’s sets me apart from other stylist is that I created a safe space for my clients to come and relax and they can talk to me about anything. I’ve built sisterhoods and a family of my own just by my talent.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My brother who helped me pay my way to start beauty school, my dad for teaching me how to braid when I was 5, my mom for always being so loud and proud about me. I give credit to my clients that support me and that have became like sisters to me. My bestfriend that started off as a client but became so much more than that, she helps me with my business, helps me come up with new ideas, let’s me create content and express myself artistically and so much more. Also my kids they think I’m a superhero and they’re so proud to call me their mom.
