Today we’d like to introduce you to Sondra DeWerd.
Sondra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always known I loved doing hair. In 2009, I enrolled at Nova Academy of Cosmetology in Rochester, MN, and graduated with honors in 2010. Hair school was everything I hoped it would be—I fell in love with the craft. My mom was a hairstylist too, but like most young girls, I wanted to take my own path first. I went to college and became a dental assistant in Las Vegas, but at the age of 20 I felt called back home to pursue what I truly loved: hair.
After graduation, I moved to Mankato and started working at Regis Salon. Just four months later, my life was forever changed when I was involved in a drinking and driving accident that tragically took two lives and left me severely injured. I spent years healing both mentally and physically, and I also served a prison sentence during this time.
By God’s grace, my brain and body healed after multiple surgeries, and while in prison I was able to keep my cosmetology license active through the school program offered there. Before my release, I reached out to the owner of a local Cost Cutters, knowing he would understand my story. As expected, he gave me a chance, and I worked there for eight months before moving to Serenity Couture in the mall, where I spent four years building my skills and continuing my education.
After having my first child, I felt it was time to step out on my own. In 2019, I became an independent stylist, renting salon suites until my son started kindergarten. At that point, I decided to move my salon into my home, both for convenience and to be present for my children. I was nervous about whether my clients would follow me, but they did—and my business has only continued to grow.
Today, I run “Look at me, I’m Sondra d.” out of my home salon. I am busier than ever, grateful for every client who trusts me, and grounded in the truth that God is good, all the time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a smooth road, I feel God has guided me the entire way. If my intuition is telling me something is off, I try to listen, pivot and change my plans.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in blonde hair transformations—there’s just something about being blonde that feels bright, cheerful, and radiant. While I love working with every shade and color, full-foil blondes are my true specialty. I enjoy the challenge of finding the perfect tone for each guest and love the confidence it brings them when we get it just right.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
