Susannah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Susannah Okutoro, an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Certified Emergency Nurse, Certified Nurse Midwife, and owner of Livly Wellness. My journey began amidst the challenges of the Liberian civil war, where I witnessed firsthand the resilience of women improvising to care for their families’ health needs and their hustle to provide for their families financially through entrepreneurship. Inspired by these experiences, I pursued a career in nursing upon relocating to New York City, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Lehman College in 2003, and later a Master’s degree in Nurse Midwifery from Columbia University in 2009.
Over the years, I have dedicated myself to emergency nursing and midwifery care in various hospitals across New York City and Minnesota. Currently, I find great fulfillment in my role as a midwife, yet my entrepreneurial spirit remains strong. The recent COVID-19 crisis brought back memories of the resourcefulness I admired during the war, motivating me to establish Livly Wellness. My deep-rooted passion for optimal health and vitality is apparent at Livly Wellness. We see joy in lives being transformed for the better. Located at the Highland Center in St. Paul, Livly Wellness specializes in IV therapy services tailored to address a wide range of health needs, from chronic fatigue, chronic pain, inflammatory disorders, thyroid conditions, malabsorption, acne, PMS, to pregnancy-related conditions like morning sickness or hyperemesis. We also offer hormone replacement and weight loss services, including GLP-1 agonist injections, with options for mobile and telehealth in the Twins Cities.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being an entrepreneur requires resilience and determination. While fulfilling, it presents significant challenges. My primary hurdle has been networking, a skill I’ve had to cultivate despite my natural introversion tendency and preference for smaller groups. Through entrepreneurship, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of networking and forging connections, an area in which I am continually improving upon as I am rather content with a small group or circle. Through entrepreneurship, I have learned the power of networking and making connections. This is an area that I continue to work on.
