Hi Swapna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been obsessed with clothes since I was sewing dresses for my dolls! This love of clothes and handmade things led me to pursue an education in fashion design and merchandising, followed by a decade-long stint as a fashion designer in New York City. Here, I spent countless hours finessing the fit, identifying the best fabrics, and designing new collections each season. After the birth of my kids, I decided to stay home with them, but 5 years into motherhood, I missed the stimulation and creativity my work offered. I also missed the social interactions and dressing up daily for work. After that, I started being intentional about dressing, even if I was home with my kids or only going to the playground with them. Gradually, the compliments started coming in. The invitations to help with wardrobe or picking out the perfect interview outfits also flooded in with them. I recognized an opportunity to create a business that would perfectly marry my creativity and the confidence-boosting style that women asked me for help with.
I specialize in empowering ambitious women to develop their unique personal style, ensuring they exude confidence in every setting. Whether appearing in photos, videos, brand imagery, virtual meetings, or live events, I aim to help them shine authentically and poised. My clients seek my expertise when they have significant spotlight opportunities, such as SXSW or SharkTank, but I also help them elevate their everyday style. Great style isn’t reserved for life’s big moments like TV appearances, high-stakes speaking engagements, or job interviews. Transforming how we dress influences how others perceive us and how we view ourselves, impacting our self-worth, confidence, and productivity. I am passionate about educating my clients and students on the psychological aspects of fashion. Understanding this connection leads to profound personal transformations.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is often said that overnight success takes 5-10 years to achieve, and this couldn’t be truer. Entrepreneurship is not a straight, flat road but a bumpy ride filled with peaks, valleys, and roadblocks. I took on every task in the earliest days of bootstrapping my business, navigating a steep learning curve. I had to learn how to write my copy, market my business, and handle all the behind-the-scenes work, which was time-consuming and exhausting. Shortly after launching my business, the global pandemic turned everything upside down. People swapped fancy outfits for pajamas and rarely left their homes. Four years later, we still navigate a mixed-up world, with Zoom meetings blending comfy bottoms and business attire on top.
In the summer of 2020, with no client work on the horizon, I decided to share my expertise by creating a digital course. I condensed the strategies I used with my high-paying clients into a four-week program to empower women who wanted to elevate their style but needed more time to be ready for one-on-one support. This program allowed them to do some of the work themselves.
Fast forward four years, and my digital course, CEO STYLE SOCIETY, has reached women entrepreneurs worldwide, from New York to Germany to Singapore. My students are now taking charge of their photo shoots, attracting their ideal clients, and experiencing personal and professional growth. This course has enabled me to connect with women on a deeper level and expand beyond my local reach while also providing a significant additional source of income for my business.
Two years ago, my family and I relocated to the great state of Minnesota. This move meant rebuilding our lives from the ground up after 25 years in the New York City area, rebuilding my business, and forming new connections and partnerships. Throughout this journey, I have learned that resilience and adaptability are key to thriving in business and life. Relocating to Minnesota has provided a fresh start and exciting new opportunities. As I continue to support and inspire women entrepreneurs globally, I remain committed to helping them discover their unique style and build their confidence, one outfit at a time. Together, we are redefining success, proving that anything is possible with determination and the proper support.
