Meet Tom Dokman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Dokman.

Hi Tom, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started on our wedding day. We served Crusted Ribeye Roasts with our signature 127 Blend®. As a special gift to our guests, each was given a bottle of our special spice.

Weeks later, we began receiving refill requests from friends and family who wanted more of it. That’s when we realized we were onto something and have since created four more hand-crafted blends. Hence, Here’s the Deal Spice Company® was born.

We launched in November 2019!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our original spice blend handed out at our wedding wasn’t organic so when we decided to launch our company with organic ingredients, we didn’t realize how much that would alter the ratios in the original recipe. This created challenges up front to get the recipe to reflect the original spice blend handed out at our wedding. It took some time, but we got it!

There were definitely a few learning curves. In addition to the ratio adjustments, we had to do a lot of research to adhere to the FDA and MDA rules and regulations, as well as the 101 on opening your own business. Everything we did upfront was a web search! Trying to do the right thing and learn as we go! Every day we learned something new!

We also love to give back to other local companies starting up… if we can share the knowledge, we have gained thus far to make it easier for them, that makes us happy!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have worked in the culinary industry for over 20 years. My love for cooking and passion for food led to a lifetime of experiences. These ranged from Butcher shops, Executive catering, Executive Sous Chef, Grill chef at the 2009 PGA Championship & 2016 Ryder Cup, Venison processing extraordinaire and managing the meat department at Minneapolis’s premier restaurant, Travail Kitchen, to name a few. All of which led up to Here’s The Deal Spice Co.!

We are most proud of being able to incorporate my culinary background into a product that folks can take home and make chef quality creations on their own.

What sets us apart is our Spice blends are Organic and Chef Developed. We set a high bar on quality organic, vegan, gluten free and low sodium ingredients and blend in small batches in order to bring the best and freshest product to your home.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We are located in Plymouth, MN! We love how supportive our community is and the many trails, parks it offers. Plymouth is also one of the larger suburbs of Minneapolis with around 80k people!

There really aren’t many “local” restaurants that aren’t chains around the area. We would love to be able to incorporate our blends on some local menus. Maybe that means we should open our own…. 😉
