Meet Whitney Schupp of Eagan, MN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Schupp

Hi Whitney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From 2012 to 2020, I dedicated myself to college and various jobs, eventually earning degrees in medical administration and becoming a certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA). During my studies, I completed my fieldwork and officially became an OTA. However, it was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which made the experience far more challenging. While my true passion was to work with children, I found myself primarily working with the elderly population due to the limitations of the pandemic. This left me questioning whether I was truly on the right path.

Amid this professional uncertainty, I also began to face significant health struggles. While working, I contracted toxic mold poisoning and chronic Lyme disease, which left me bedridden and fighting for my life. As my health deteriorated, I spent months searching for answers, feeling physically and mentally drained. It was during this time, while the world slowed down around me, that I was given the space to reflect deeply on what truly mattered in my life.

I realized that my true passion had always been photography, not the medical field. With all the time spent at home, I dove into learning photography—teaching myself through online resources and experimenting with my DSLR. Slowly, I started to build my photography business, and over the past six years, what once was a hobby transformed into a career.

Leaving the healthcare field was a difficult decision. I genuinely miss the creativity involved in therapy and the fulfillment that came with helping people achieve their goals. But there’s something incredibly special about preserving memories and emotions through photography. Now, I get to capture moments that people will cherish forever, and that is deeply fulfilling.

Photography has always been close to my heart. Growing up as the middle child, I often felt overlooked in the rush of family life. Our camera was rarely out, so I became the one to snap photos to preserve our memories. I even took a photography class in high school, but it wasn’t until I was gifted my first DSLR camera in my 20s that I truly dove into the craft. From there, I taught myself through countless educational videos and by learning from talented photographers who’ve mentored me along the way.

What started as a simple hobby has now blossomed into a meaningful career. As I began photographing friends and family, I found a passion for capturing raw, genuine moments—those small yet powerful moments that tell a story without words. Six years into this journey, I feel more connected to my work than ever. I am beyond grateful for the path that has led me here, and I love every aspect of this creative journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
t has definitely not been a smooth road. Over the past few years, I’ve faced significant personal and professional challenges, from battling chronic illness to navigating a major career shift. My health struggles have made even the simplest tasks feel difficult, and on top of that, I’ve endured profound personal loss and trauma. Losing my mom in 2022, supporting my sister through her health struggles, and facing a series of family tragedies have all added emotional weight to my journey.

These challenges have, at times, made me question my path and my ability to continue capturing the stories of others. Imposter syndrome has been a constant companion, and I’ve wrestled with the fear of not being enough or not giving people what they expect. I’ve also faced the uncertainty of whether it was the right time to fully transition into my photography career, especially with financial pressures and the current challenges of running a business.

Despite it all, I’ve kept pushing forward because my passion for photography is what keeps me going. The road hasn’t been easy, but every obstacle has forced me to grow and find a new sense of balance between my personal healing and my career. Running a business has been tough, but I believe in what I do and the stories I capture. While the journey hasn’t been smooth, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come and the resilience I’ve built along the way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been fascinated by the power of a moment—a single glance, a laugh, a touch—that tells a story without words. As an intimate lifestyle photographer, I’m drawn to the beauty of everyday connections. My work is about more than just taking pictures; it’s about freezing raw, fleeting moments for families, couples, and individuals. I specialize in capturing authentic, emotional connections, creating memories that will bring warmth back to life. My goal isn’t simply to take a picture; it’s to preserve a memory that can be relived time and again. I want to evoke the sound of echoed giggles in a now-quiet hallway or create space for simple moments to come to life again. These tiny, precious memories are frozen in time—moments you wish you could live in forever. Because one day, that picture may be all someone has left of that memory.

I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with my clients over the years. Being invited into their most intimate moments is an incredible honor, and knowing that the images I create will be treasured for generations is deeply rewarding. Whether it’s capturing a family’s first moments together or the enduring love of a couple that’s only deepened over time, I’m grateful to play a part in preserving these memories.
What sets me apart is my approach to storytelling. I focus on capturing the true essence of relationships and connections. I take the time to understand my clients—what makes them unique—so I can reflect their journey through my lens. Every session is personal and tailored to their story, with the goal of helping them feel at ease and fully present in the moment. It’s not about posed shots; it’s about documenting their lives in a way that feels natural, light, and full of warmth.

Ultimately, it’s the stories—the connections—that I’m most passionate about. I want my clients to look at their photos not just as images, but as memories that stir the emotions and moments they’ll carry with them forever. That’s what makes my work truly meaningful.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor in photography can be one of the most valuable steps in growing your craft. For me, it’s all about building genuine relationships with people who share your passion and vision. Start by seeking out photographers whose work you admire, and reach out with curiosity and respect. Most experienced photographers are more than willing to share advice, offer feedback, or simply chat about their journey. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be open to constructive criticism—it’s one of the best ways to refine your style and techniques.

Networking doesn’t just happen at large events or workshops; it’s about being part of a supportive community. I’ve found that the most meaningful connections often come from smaller, more intimate interactions. Joining photography groups, online forums, or local meetups can open doors to valuable relationships—and sometimes, it’s these connections that lead to mentorship opportunities.

What has worked well for me is staying authentic and consistent. I’ve built strong relationships with mentors and peers by showing up, being genuinely interested in their work, and sharing my own experiences. Don’t rush the process—let it happen organically. A mentor should not only teach you about photography but also guide you through the business, creativity, and mindset that come with it.
