Rising Stars: Meet Amy Gorowsky of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Gorowsky.

Amy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started baking in high school, when I was on a quest to develop a “healthy” chocolate chip cookie. To this day chocolate chip cookies are probably my favorite dessert to eat (and not the healthy kind)! In 2021, I saw a YouTube video of a cake being stacked and frosted and became inspired to try making a cake for my child’s birthday. As the saying goes, the rest is history. I fell in love with the process of baking and decorating cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops and launched The Joyful Crumb in 2022.

My primary passion is buttercream florals on wedding cakes and cupcakes. I enrolled in The Piped Peony Academy several years ago to learn from the incredibly talented and innovative, Dara Waitkus, a leader in the buttercream floral world. I am so inspired by her floral art and have really enjoyed learning to create edible floral arrangements for customers.

I also accept custom orders for birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, bridal and baby showers, baptisms and confirmations, and more. I absolutely love working with clients to design custom cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops that will add that special touch to any event or occasion!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My cake art journey has been incredibly rewarding and I have learned a lot along the way. Being the sole owner and employee during the launch of The Joyful Crumb means taking on every role that makes this business run. To my advantage, there are so many helpful resources available for almost every aspect of running a baking business that my experience has been relatively smooth and successful. I became familiar with cottage food laws in MN and registered to be a cottage food producer, for which I found the pathway is pretty straightforward and there is a lot of local support. I created and launched a website using a template designed by Bake This Happen, which was a fantastic, thorough, and seamless experience. I am grateful to the family friend who designed my logo. I have utilized resources from The Out of Home Baker, Brette, regarding business-related aspects. So many have paved the way before me to make this whole experience relatively fun and painless!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in creating custom-designed cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops for every occasion. I value ingredients and recipes that taste amazing and an exquisite design that is sure to be a statement piece at any event. I am most proud of the skillset I have worked hard to develop piping realistic buttercream flowers. The amount of detail and technical complexity required to create each flower takes these florals to another level of realism compared to traditional piping techniques.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about the Twin Cities area is the sense of community. I have met so many customers who are simply interested in supporting small, local businesses, which is so rewarding to be part of.
