Rising Stars: Meet Anita Devi Powell of Minneapolis, MN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Devi Powell.

Hi Anita Devi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began writing poetry as a way to express emotions I didn’t yet have the words for—an outlet to process pain and translate trauma into something beautiful. At first, it was a cryptic form of self-therapy, but over time, it became a way to illuminate hope, too. Through my writing, I strive to show that even in the darkest seasons, light is possible. My poetry reflects a journey—one where healing isn’t a final destination, but a brave beginning. And even though my story is still unfolding, I’ve found a kind of happily-ever-after in reclaiming my voice and helping others feel seen through it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—healing rarely is. As a writer, I’ve had to unlearn survival patterns, sit with my shadows, and confront the kind of pain that doesn’t always want to be written about. Along the way, I’ve had to unlearn survival patterns, face generational wounds, and navigate seasons of self-doubt and burnout.

There were moments I questioned whether my voice mattered or if my story was too much—or not enough. But every struggle became a stepping stone, shaping both my art and my resilience. Poetry has always met me where I am.

Through it, I’ve found clarity, courage, and a reminder that vulnerability is a strength—not a setback. It’s in the slow growth, the quiet breakthroughs, the beauty of becoming—one poem, one lesson at a time, and the brave act of writing it all down that I’ve discovered just how powerful storytelling can be.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a poet, author, and storyteller at heart. My work blends raw emotion with intentional language—turning personal experiences into poetry that resonates with others on a soul-deep level. I’ve published three books of poetry, each one tracing different parts of my healing journey, and I’m most proud of the way my words have made people feel seen, held, and understood.

What sets my work apart is its emotional honesty. I don’t shy away from the hard stuff—grief, trauma, identity, transformation—but I also make space for softness, joy, and the kind of hope that whispers, you’re not alone. I believe in the power of language to heal, connect, and transform, and I pour that belief into every poem I write. Whether it’s through a book, a performance, or a quiet moment shared on the page, I want my words to remind people of their own strength and softness—and that both can exist at the same time.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Authenticity, honesty, and growth have been the foundation of everything I create. I lead with my truth—no filters, no perfection, just real, evolving, human experience. I believe that success isn’t about appearances, it’s about alignment—and staying rooted in who I am, even when the world tries to reshape me.

My work often pays homage to the goddesses who walk with me spiritually and the beautiful humans who’ve helped guide me in this lifetime. I write to give voice to the heartbreak and trauma so many endure in silence, and to hold space for healing—not just mine, but for others who see themselves reflected in my words.

I also bring the hot spice and sacred fire of my South Asian and Indo-Caribbean roots. There’s a rhythm in our culture, a richness in our resilience, and a glow in our beautiful brown skin that I carry proudly into everything I do. My fusion of cultures, spirituality, and storytelling is what makes my voice unique—and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
