Rising Stars: Meet Ann Sisel of St Paul

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Sisel.

Hi Ann, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Lincoln Nebraska. I began an art degree there but not that mature and didn’t finish my degree.
I was married and moved to MN and had children. I didn’t take time for myself until I was close to 36 yrs of age.

I decided to get my fine arts degree at that time. My training came from the talented professors at Macalester University in St Paul, MN. I am a member of two watercolor organizations in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. And, I am a signature member of Red River Watercolor Society, NorthStar Watermedia Society, and Minnesota Watercolor Society. I also enjoy my memberships in Minnesota Artist’s Association and Gallery 96. I have received awards for my unique artwork.

I am a gardener, fiber artist and mostly a painter and sculptor in my senior years. Life is good after retirement.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The most difficult time was while I was working at a computer job and trying to find energy for creative time. My husband was supportive but I had to juggle a lot.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My artwork is unusual and I try to make the colors sing. I am known as an intuitive artist who can capture an idea or a scene in a couple of hours. I use unusual tools and love to make ink marks or calligraphic shapes. Sometimes I make a pen that allows me to make thin and thick lines. This has been noted by jurors when I win awards. I am also know for hiding birds and animals in my art.

I am most proud of continuing to grow and experiment in my artwork. People can tell I have fun in the process and it brightens their day.

The style I have developed comes from years of drawing and enjoying and observing people and objects. Experimentation is another thing that sets me apart from others.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
That I can paint for a while, then start a pot of soup, then go for a walk and come back to finish my painting or sculpture.
