Today we’d like to introduce you to Barry Travis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Beer can collecting was popular when I was a kid. When my parent’s threatened to recycle my childhood collection in the late 1990’s, I intervened, kept a few sentimental items, and renewed the passion and collection. I discovered there were still clubs at the local and national level. The further I dove in, the more I was rewarded. Now I am on the board of a national organization, have been an expert witness in court cases, and am helping supply a large museum with vintage artifacts.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Persistence, fairness and developing relationships. And taking risks at an appropriate level for your finances and experience is essential.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well…you’d originally asked about my hobby. But my day job for 38 years is designing rings for a company called Jostens. I’m lucky enough to get paid to get better at what I love doing. I meet with folks that have (or are planning on) achieving a significant milestone. They are receptive to my message and it’s flattering when they trust me to “tell their story” in the ring.
I’m proud to know that my designs will live on after I’m gone, and passed down to heirs, kids or others. Although designs, sizes and innovations may change, the fact that military and championship rings are still meaningful (and must be earned) is special.
I’d say that my ability to collaborate and listen are what helps make my output unique. Also, the ability to subtly weave in symbolism and elements that are meaningful to the team or class working with me.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Al Nuness-VP of Sports. He lead by example and I’ve never heard him boast or use his title. He trusted his teams members to bring their own talents to help win the account. He valued all folks equally and could use humor when appropriate.
Charlie Anderson-My National Guard sergeant that worked in Pro Sports. He encouraged and believed in me. Helped me get my job and gave me supportive advice that got me here.
My elementary and HS teachers that noticed, supported and encouraged the “kid who liked to draw” even though we had no art classes in our school.
George Lajoe/Mike Callison-the two sports guys tha taught be example when meeting with customers. Numerous quips, tips and suggestions while winning accounts.
