Rising Stars: Meet Chris Mcduffie of North of Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Mcduffie

Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been a creative and artist my whole life, and have worked across a number of mediums including drawing, painting, clothing design, sneaker customization, band, stop motion home movies, clay figures, etc. I’ve always been curious about the world, and have used art as the medium to best explore it and express myself.

In college, I picked up a camera to take photos for the sneaker customization side hustle I had for clients and competitions, and fell in love with photography. The rest is history.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Existence is suffering. Growth is beautifully painful. The ebb and flow of business are not unaffected by life. I got started in photography out of college in the middle of the Great Recession. It was the best time as attention was so cheap, yet the worst time as there was no money invested in anything. I did a ton of free and discounted work for years to build a body of work and client list. I firmly believe necessity is the mother of invention and being able to create compelling work with few resources forces you to overcome many obstacles.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a commercial photographer and filmmaker who loves to tell diverse stories from all corners of humanity. I’m probably most recognized for my work with larger brands and organizations like the Timberwolves. I think being able to sustain a career in the arts has been my most proud accomplishment. Being able to move seamlessly between stills and motion in production and post production definitely gives me an edge over many of my peers.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
The day to day grind can feel a bit isolating, but it’s so important to appreciate that I have a career because of many art directors, PR specialists, heads of organizations, assistants, crew, collaborators, and loving friends and family who say my name in rooms I am not, provide guidance, kind words and keep me going.
