Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Rice.
Hi Cindy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story began with a visit from my sister asking for the two of us to make a Potica! We had watched our mother make them for our whole life! It was a little bit scary that first time! We did not have much luck! My mom was very intense and not very organized while making Potica! My sister seemed to have those same instincts and caused a lot of kaos in the kitchen! I encouraged her to go home and let me try on my own and it was a success! It came very natural to me so I kept going! So I started making them for friends during the holidays! I was asked to teach classes through a variety of different community ed classes! Eventually I branched out to going to 2 or 3 craft fairs a year! It is only a hobby for me! I never advertise! Never did I want to take away from someone who does it for a living!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I guess finding time to make my Potica was always a challenge while I was working and raising my family! Weekends is the only time I had to make them! Being retired now is so much better! I can take my time and enjoy the process of my hobby!!!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I was a custodian at the high school for 34 years! I ran our auditorium was the junior class advisor. Being a custodian for all those years was never my dream but it worked out for my family and I! I got to help kids and be involved in a lot of meaningful things! I was even able to do some demonstrations in the home ec classes on making a Potica!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I watched my Mom make poticas while I was growing up and I swore I would never make one! She did a lot of yelling at everyone and was not very organized making Potica! Understandable she had 4 little girls running around so it was probably well deserved! Even with all that confusion I must have been paying attention! Ha
