Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Althoff.
Hi Corey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into floral design began in 1999 with my very first job at a small flower shop. From the moment I touched my first bouquet, I realized design came naturally to me. Those early days were filled with discovery and learning—laying the foundation for a career I would come to love deeply.
Two years later, I took a leap into a more eclectic, high-end floral boutique. It was there that my creativity truly began to flourish. Surrounded by inspiring mentors and an atmosphere that encouraged innovation, I explored the art of design with both fresh and silk flowers. I wasn’t just creating arrangements—I was finding my voice as a designer.
Those formative years still influence every piece I create today.
There was a time when I stepped away from florals to become a display merchandiser at a well-known furniture store. Yet even then, I found myself drawn back, continuing to craft custom silk florals in my spare time. It became clear: floral design wasn’t just a job—it was part of who I am.
I returned wholeheartedly to the industry, working with several small-town florists that helped deepen my connection to the community. It was during this time that I discovered my true passion: weddings. The personal, emotional nature of wedding florals spoke to me, and I knew I had found my calling.
In 2012, I took a bold step and founded Corey Allen Designs. Building my own business was both challenging and rewarding—and it led to an incredible opportunity. When the chance came to purchase Posy Floral, I knew it was meant to be. It felt like the perfect next chapter in a journey built on creativity, perseverance, and heart.
Today, I feel incredibly grateful—for my supportive family and friends, for the chance to bring joy through my work, and for every person I meet along the way. Floral design continues to inspire me daily, and I’m excited for all the beauty yet to come.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business is never easy—but doing it in a close-knit community where you’re the “new face in town” adds a whole new layer of challenge. When I first purchased Posy, my biggest struggle was gaining the trust and support of the local community. I was, after all, an outsider—waltzing in and shaking things up a bit! It took a solid eight months before I truly felt like I had made the right choice.
To break the ice, I leaned into humor and honesty. I’d often joke, “I’m imported into your region,” or say, “My presence was requested in your area.” Those lighthearted moments helped me connect with people—and slowly, they began to embrace both me and my vision for Posy Floral and Gifts.
But nothing could have prepared me—or any small business owner—for the challenge that came in 2020. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it tested every ounce of creativity, resilience, and adaptability I had. Navigating restrictions while trying to keep customers engaged and safe was no easy feat. I had to pivot quickly, becoming even more resourceful with how I marketed and served my community.
I leaned heavily on Facebook, local KCHK radio, and—perhaps most importantly—the unwavering support of friends and family. Through it all, I stayed focused on delivering beauty and joy, even in the most uncertain of times. And somehow, that determination paid off.
Looking back, those early struggles and the unexpected hurdles have only strengthened my love for what I do. They reminded me that floral design isn’t just about flowers—it’s about people, community, and connection. And I’m so grateful to now be part of a town that once felt unfamiliar, but now feels like home.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the arrangements I create—it’s the support I’m able to offer. A shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, a warm hug. I specialize in one-of-a-kind floral designs and customized funeral pieces that speak from the heart. Through my work, I’ve had the privilege of helping bring people comfort in difficult times, celebrate some of the biggest moments in their lives, and bring beauty into their everyday spaces.
We’re more than just a flower shop. Nestled in a small, conservative town, Posy Floral is powered by a team of feminists who care deeply about kindness, community, and standing up for what’s right. We believe flowers reflect the heart of the people who give and receive them—and we believe in honoring every heart. We celebrate and welcome our LGBTQ+ customers. We affirm, unequivocally, that Black Lives Matter. And we believe feminism is for everyone—because it’s about fairness, dignity, and lifting each other up.
We know not everyone in our town shares our beliefs, but we all share something powerful: a love for our neighbors, a desire to do good, and the hope to be treated with compassion. So, when you step into Posy Floral and Gifts, you’re not just buying a bouquet. You’re choosing inclusion. You’re choosing to support a business that believes in love in all its forms. And yes—we’ll still wrap it all up with a bow.
It’s all part of the service here at Posy Floral and Gifts—where everyone is welcome to bloom.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
When I’m not designing with flowers, you’ll likely find me with a book in hand (a real one—because I’m proudly old school like that) or working through a crossword or puzzle. I’m an avid reader and word lover, drawn to the quiet satisfaction of solving things—whether it’s a tricky clue or creating the perfect arrangement to express what words sometimes can’t. These little passions fuel my creativity and help me bring thoughtfulness and care into every design I make.
