Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Devon.
Hi Corey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born into a very musical family. My mom and her siblings, The King Family Singers, traveled throughout West Texas and surrounding states, spreading the gospel of Jesus through song. My Grandfathers were Pastors, and I grew up in their churches. I started singing at the age of three and knew that God had given me a special gift. I started as a worship leader and choir director at my Uncle’s (Bishop Samuel B. King Sr.) Church, Praise Center Ministries – Lubbock, TX. This is where I developed the most as a singer and choir director. I later earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Texas Tech University. And then taught music in the public school system for over two years. After teaching, I started leading worship full-time at Trinity Church – Lubbock, TX. After serving there for almost four years, God called me to greater responsibility in His Kingdom, which led me to where I am today—the Worship Pastor at Miracle City Church in downtown Minneapolis, MN. I’ve been leading worship here for almost three years. Within the last year I’ve released my own music as a solo artist – Corey Devon.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For the most part, it’s been a smooth road. One challenge I faced was getting to know and understand who I am as a worship leader. It’s easy to compare yourself to other worship leaders/artists – whether it be their style, their following, or their successes. Ultimately, it’s about being obedient to the call that’s been placed on an individual’s life not someone else’s.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been singing for multiple years and just began my journey as a solo artist. I am known for leading worship and directing choirs. I have participated in many singing groups, from Quartet to R&B Gospel. I am well-versed in Contemporary Christian music and Gospel as well. There are so many facets to who I am as an artist.
I also own a booking management company, Creative Light Management. My company secures bookings and negotiates contracts for artists. I am very gifted in administration, which is very hard to find; especially as a creative. I love to help my clients focus on their craft while I handle the business side of their careers.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To not allow the opinions of others to distract me from the vision God has placed in my heart.
