Today we’d like to introduce you to David (DJ D.Mil) Miller. They and their team shared their story with us below:
DJ D.Mil is the direct link to the twin cities’ music scene. Miller’s older brother Jim was a break dancer with the St. Paul wild style in the ’80s, part of the b-boy street culture. Born into a single-parent household on the often wild and impoverished east side. Money was usually tight, but big brother Jim’s classic rap, ‘80/the 90s, R&B, & rock tastes, which included Run DMC, Prince, Sting, and New Edition, helped fill the voids as David and twin brother Edde followed Jim around the twin cities pioneering hip-hop scene.
Hip-hop and music have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, d.mil stated. Tragedy struck the family when D.Mil’s brother, Jim, was killed in a car accident at the age of 19. Maybe to keep the memory of his brother alive or out of his growing talent as a rap writer and DJ, or both, D.Mil scraped together enough money in 1996 to buy his turntables and start his vinyl collection. It wasn’t long before he was cutting with the best of the local DJs and attracting high-caliber emcees. D.Mil started spinning events & clubs at the age of 19.
Club dates in the US, Canada & Mexico, opening DJ slots for acts: Snoop Dogg, Puff Daddy, Akon, Wu-Tang Clan, Lil’ Wayne, Rick Ross, Fabolous, Pusha T, Slick Rick, Ice-T, Sugar Hill Gang, Royce Da 5’9, 8 Ball & MJG, Bun B, Sean Kingston, MGK, Wiz Khalifa, Schoolboy Q, Kid Ink, Caira, 36 Mafia, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Coolio, Krs-One, & so many more. DJ sets w/ the biggest DJs in the world: Funk Master Flex, DJ Am, DJ Rectangle, & DJ Craze. D.Mil has been building his following & national presence for years, with national producing credits & album credits, Shadyville DJs, 2016 Tcuma DJ of the Year, 2016 Tcuma Mixtape of the Year, 2013 Red Bull 3style DJ, 2012 Winter Rehab, DJ Battle Winner, the 2008 Hustler of the Year Award, 2007 TC Best DJ Award, 2007 SP Style Crew Award, 2006 SP Style Promo Team Award, 2000 MMA nominee for hip-hop record of the year. Tv scores, commercials, and more.
DJ D.Mil is a true DJ, behind the decks is a performance that will spark any size audience and mc skills that work the crowd into the DJ set. “I like to warm them up, then make them sing”, says d-mil spinning sing-a-long party anthem sets. All music styles (open format) current to classic, hosting various residences in the twin cities, including truck park (St. Paul), union (Minneapolis), freight house (Stillwater), formerly the drive at 5 mixers at go 95.3 FM, currently producing weekend satellite radio mix-shows, professional sports games for the twins, Timberwolves, showtime boxing, fox boxing, djing public, private, virtual, & corporate events.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ups & downs in the ever-changing music industry, including the Beat 96 radio format change over in 2010, and more recently go 95.3 radio being sold and the format changed during the pandemic in 2021. DJ D.Mil spent 10 years as an on-air mixer with Mr. Peter Parker.
