Rising Stars: Meet Debra Bernard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Bernard.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My family and I moved to Minnesota in the Fall of 2012 and that’s when got our Vizsla, Indy. That’s also the time I discovered Instagram and decided to start posting cute photos of my dog. I’m a portrait photographer, and I thought since we are new to the state this would a be great way to build my clientele and also push my creativity. We are now up to over 13k followers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has been a really positive experience for me. I’ve grown in many ways with my photography skills and have been able to collaborate with some super awesome Local businesses. I think the hardest part of putting yourself and your pet out there, is having to let your followers know the heartache when you lose a pet. Indy passed away from Cancer a little over a year ago. This community was so compassionate during that time and I really felt the love everyone had for him. Since then, we have gotten his great great niece Nyla and she has helped heal our hearts and fill that void.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a portrait photographer with a focus on Senior and Family photography. I was thrilled to be featured in the Wall Street Journal for my work on the Front Steps project during the Covid shutdowns. The Star Tribune also interviewed me for this project as well.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To just trust yourself and be real!!!
