Rising Stars: Meet Dennis Benson of Willmar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Benson

Hi Dennis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have a BS degree in Music Ed from Bemidji State University. I have taught instrumental and vocal music in high school and college. I also learned piano technology after high school and have had a business called Dennis Benson Piano Service since then.

I currently service pianos in central Minnesota as the main concert, school, and residential piano tuner and technician.

I also direct out local community band called the Prairie Winds Band in it’s outdoor summer concerts and play trombone the other seasons. I have also directed the local community orchestra, a local church choir, and many pit orchestras at The Barn Theatre in Willmar.

My hobbies include wood turning (specializing in conducting batons), photography, and web design. I am the main photographer in the area for event and sports photography and I have batons all over the world.

I am married with a wife and 3 children and 9 grandchildren.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a pretty smooth road I think because I live a diversified life style with lot of interests.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
With a bachelors degree in music I have had many opportunities to perform and conduct small and large groups.

As a photographer I have photographed many interesting events. Rockin Robbins is our outdoor summer concert series which generates 3,000-8,000 audience members with lot of great photo moments. We have a semi-pro baseball league which uses mainly my photography. I am a member of our local photographers group which keeps me learning new skills.

As a wood turner I have made batons for many high school, college, and professional directors including Michael Buble’s orchestra director.

As a church musician I directed a choir at First Baptist Church for 30 years and conducted many cantatas.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am adverse to risk taking which is probably why my journey and been good. I really like to prepare and thoughtfully consider each move. I also don’t like conflict so try to see all sides of situations so as to avoid conflict. People generally like and I like them back.
