Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Keezy.

Dj Keezy

Hi Akeena, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I found myself drawn to the world of music through my mother playing classics every Sunday morning from Prince, Sade, Janet Jackson, to Chaka Khan. In high school, I began to make mixtapes for my friends, where I grew an interest in curating music for others, and that’s when I received my first pair of turntables.

As I continued to explore my passion for music, my interest in DJing began to take shape in 2013 at St. Cloud State at a bar called “Biology.” I asked to use their speakers on their down days, and eventually, I grew to have my night.

Recognizing the potential of this newfound passion, I decided to take DJing more seriously. On weekends, I would drive down to Minneapolis to DJ for my mentor at the time, “DJ Snuggles,” who taught me the ropes and introduced me to the Minneapolis music scene. As my dedication and determination began to pay off, I started gaining recognition as a solo act where I had the opportunity to play at Cause, First Avenue, and Honey.

However, throughout my career, I became increasingly aware of the lack of representation within the music scene. So two years into my career, I decided to take matters into my own hands and created an event called “The Klituation.” The event provides a supportive and empowering environment to showcase women & LGBTQIA+ people in their artistry. I’m very proud to say that 8 years later, The Klituation is still successful to this day and now has expanded to holding events out of state in Oakland, California.

From there, I would say my reputation grew when I earned opportunities to open for high-profile artists such as Kehlani, Jessie Reyez, DJ Spinderella, and many more. In addition, I had the privilege of performing at major music festivals and touring nationally and internationally. I have also had the pleasure of collaborating with other notable local artists throughout my career.

Overall, to get to where I am today. I’d say that my success has been shaped by staying true to my sound, authenticity, and resilience, and to the community who have consistently inspired and supported me both in my career and everyday life.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road being a QWOC in a scene that is male-dominated. However, I have a lot of gratitude because I have learned a lot along the way. I quickly learned at the beginning of my career when I was shadowing male DJs that they viewed me through a separate lens and didn’t take me seriously. Or touring later in my career with a national act and being asked “If I’m a backup dancer.”

Continuously, I noticed there was an ongoing battle where I felt like I had to prove myself to not just be “good for a female DJ.” Eventually, there was a turn in my career where I leaned into staying true to my sound and who I am on and off the stage to where I’m not seeking validation, especially from white cis males.

Though I was faced with these hurdles, it made me even more determined to carve my path in the industry and inspire other aspiring fem /queer DJs because, at the beginning of my career, I didn’t see Dj’s like me on major stages, getting brand deals or headlining festivals, etc.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a DJ and a curator. I’m most proud of having the courage to break down barriers by holding space for the Bipoc Lgbtqia+ community in the Twin Cities music scene.

There are so many dope talented artists in this city and it’s so easy for us to be overshadowed. I love using my platform to highlight artists and be the bridge for artists to connect or feel inspired. There’s room for all of us to shine!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Believing in yourself and staying grounded as both a person and an artist are crucial aspects. There have been instances when I performed alongside iconic artists or at historic venues like Red Rocks, and during those times, a constant reminder has been that “I’m here for a reason.”

Overcoming mental barriers requires a clear mindset, which has proven immensely helpful in guiding me through these moments. Authenticity plays a pivotal role; moving with intention, whether it pertains to the gigs I accept or the events I curate.

People naturally gravitate toward experiences they can connect with on a deeper level. Lastly, dedication is essential; the effort invested directly correlates with the rewards!
