Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddie Phillips
Hi Eddie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Eddie has always been a maker, a builder, a repairer. Educated as a mechanical engineer, with a minor in product design he has always enjoyed a hands-on life style.
In 2019 he restarted his woodworking and furniture making as a creative outlet. Like many others the pandemic afforded him time to focus on this passion.
In 2022 after developing a successful brand and a growing customer base he took the decision to leave the corporate world and focus on woodworking full time. In the spring of 2023 he attended the 12 week furniture intensive class at the center for furniture craftsmanship.
Boom Island Woodworking is named after Eddie’s favorite Minneapolis park close to where he resides. His workshop is located in the heart of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District at the Q.arma Building.
Eddie’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the appreciation for quality and the pursuit of excellence. As a craftsman he embodies a profound dedication to his work, valuing the mastery of skills and the creation of objects that carry a timeless beauty. This philosophy is built upon a commitment to craftsmanship that goes beyond simply creating functional pieces, but also extends to nurturing a profound connection with the materials and the process of creation. For Eddie, every piece becomes a reflection of his passion, integrity, and attention to detail, as he strives to instill a sense of artistry and uniqueness in each creation. Tapping into his innate creativity and embracing the philosophy of authenticity, he seeks to not only fulfill a utilitarian need but also to inspire and evoke emotion in those who encounter his work.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A career change later in life is never easy, however, Eddie’s experience working in complex corporate roles has positioned him well to overcome the challenges of starting a small arts based business. The largest challenges are finding customers who appreciate handmade studio furniture.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Studio furniture is Eddie’s passion. Handcrafting either one of a kind pieces on a commission basis or designing and building limited run items. Eddie’s designs are heavily influenced by mid-century modern styles, scandinavian design and the arts and crafts movement.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If at all possible try and find a creative space that is part of a community. Being surrounded by creatives that work in the same or even different mediums provides social interaction, creative stimulation and community.
