Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Ries.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Emily Ries. I have been interested in the modeling industry for seriously as long as I can remember. When I was young I spent my days going through fashion magazines, and I remember thinking I wanted to inspire people just like the models who graced the pages inspired me. I took my first digitals when I was 14 years old and signed with my first agency in Minneapolis when I was 15. I then signed to another agency in Minneapolis just before I turned 17, and this was when I started to get really involved in the industry. I had my first test shoots, began building my portfolio, and then nailed an internship with a magazine company winter of 2018. I continued to make more and more connections, which is really one of the main reasons I got to where I am today. Now, being 20, I have been modeling for five years. It amazes me to look back on how far I have come since I got started, and I am very grateful for the experiences I have had and the people I have met. I hope to continue growing in my career for years to come!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am lucky to say, so far, I would consider my career to be a pretty smooth road. There have definitely been times where I was let down after not booking a job, but I have learned how important it is to not be so hard on yourself. Especially in modeling, you have to know not to take absolutely anything personally. All the opportunities that are meant for you will be yours. If you don’t book the job, then it simply wasn’t meant to be! I would say the roughest part in the road for me, was when I was modeling in high school. There wasn’t really anyone else at my school (if anyone) doing the things that I was doing, and I definitely dealt with some bullying over the years. It is really hard to truly understand the modeling industry, especially if you aren’t in it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a local model based in the Twin Cities. I have been modeling for roughly 5 years now, and I have a variety of experiences including high fashion, editorials, runway, and commercial work. I am most proud of myself for continuing to pursue my dreams despite the doubts and judgment from people around me. I believe that my personality is what truly sets me apart from others. A lot of people think that being a model is all about looks, but it’s what comes from the inside that truly shines through. Having a good personality is also what really makes a person pleasant to work with on set. I have always been known for my incredibly optimistic attitude, no matter what the circumstances are, and bubbly energetic personality.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I have always been a city girl. I just love the energy that Minneapolis holds and the rush of adrenaline I get when I am in the city. Another one of my favorite parts of Minneapolis is the amount of creative people it contains. My least favorite part of our city is the amount of unresolved racial issues & social injustices it has.
