Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Susag.
Hi Esther, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in MN in a very small town where I was surrounded by cornfields. I didn’t grow up going on lavish vacations and hadn’t even seen the ocean until I was 18. When I went to college, I knew I wanted to study abroad, but what I didn’t know is that one study abroad trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos would catapult my love and passion for travel. After that I did a study abroad program called Semester at Sea that took me to 15 countries. After traveling around the world (literally) on a ship for 5 months, I knew I had to keep exploring. After graduation, I decided to forgo the typical career path and instead take a job in Guam. After Guam, I decided to yet again take another job abroad and moved to Germany. I’ve been living in Germany for 5 years now and just moved back to MN a couple of months ago. Over the past several years, I have been been able to really hone in on photography and combine that with my love for travel. Eventually, after starting to share my journey on social media, it led to more opportunities to make travel a part of my job.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think that doing something that is outside your comfort zone and outside the social norm is always going to come with some difficulties. Some of the biggest ones for me is being away from family and friends when I am traveling or living abroad and missing out on larger events in people’s lives. It’s not easy being away and it can be very isolating and lonely at times. But once I find that community of people wherever I am, that helps enormously.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer, digital media marketer, travel expert, and content creator. I work alongside brands and companies to create unique and intriguing content to help increase brand awareness and ultimately drive revenue. I also use my own Instagram and TikTok as a source for travel advice, tips, and tricks to try and help those willing to take the risk that I did. A lot of travel accounts or creators share beautiful destinations but it almost seems unattainable. I like to try and show people that they can also experience these places with the right tools and strategies.
I am extremely proud of going against what I thought “I should be doing” right after college and instead, I lived abroad for the past 7 years. It has allowed me to grow and learn so much more about myself and the rest of the world than I ever could’ve imagined.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My main goal is to help and inspire others. I want to show them that they can do anything they want in this life with the right mindset and drive. I want to help people step outside of their comfortable box and experience something or somewhere new.
