Today we’d like to introduce you to Ethan Horace.
Hi Ethan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off as a student of the High School For Recording Arts in 2004 and graduated in 2005 I enrolled in IPR College in 2012. By 2013 I was an intern for an internet radio station and I was doing shows for the station out of the college basement. Vy January 2014 I stopped the internet radio show and started my own (MNTC Radio).
Over the next two years, I volunteered at KFAI FM. My grandmother and mother both passed away 6 months apart in 2015. This lit a fire of pain and more passion in me. 2016 had a residency show that I and DJ Enferno did together on KFAI FM which was very successful.
That same year I won the marketing and promotion award from Wingstop for 2 years of marketing and PR I did for them when they brought franchises to Minnesota. The following year I won the 2017 Minnesota Journalist Of The Year Award at the Beautiful Humans Awards in Minneapolis. That same year I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. On Mother’s day 2018 I was admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery related to my Crohns disease issues and stayed for 13 days to get some things fixed inside my stomach and colon. The doctors told me if I would have waited 48 more hours to come into the hospital I would have died.
Once I was discharged, I started working out and eating differently. That led to me getting deep into basketball for a couple of years and chasing a semi-pro career. During that time in 2019 I won the S.A.V.E. Suicide Prevention Award for a show episode I did on my station in 2018 that was dedicated to those suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts. Out of the awards I’ve won over the years that one probably mattered the most. I went on tour with the Official Flight Squad Basketball team in spring 2020 and at this point, I was an athlete and not involved in radio or media as much.
Due to covid that same year I returned back to Minnesota early from the tour. After the murder of George Floyd I wanted to revive my show and station with a new version of the Power Hour and I wanted to highlight only the best indie music. I made a submission of this show as a podcast to iHeartRadio and they syndicated the program to their platform. That show was put together by me and Dante “DJ Enferno” Coleman”. Later down the line, we brought in a couple of other hosts to bring even more flavor and different perspectives to the show.
By 2021 I started booking celebrities for the Power Hour. This led to one of the cohosts Odyssey Sawyer wanting me to be a co-host on a show prospective TV program she had been trying to get off the ground called The Plug XL. I am currently a co-host of the program and I am the Public Relations Agent for the program which includes booking celebrities, the business owners, and others for interviews as well as other daily communications. The show launched in February 2022. Some notable guests we have interviewed on the Plug XL include Tyler Perry, Joseph Sikora, The main cast of Bel-Air, Omar Epps, Jay Pharoah, and more. We are currently halfway through season one. The show is broadcasted every other Wednesday and Thursday on channel 6 on Comcast in Minnesota to the 7 main metro counties via MCN6.
Currently, I am also an online student at the LA Film School in their Bachelor’s Degree program for Media Communications. Before Minnesota, I lived in North Carolina, Staten Island, and Rhode Island. My parents are both Liberian.
My goal in my career is to take it to a level where I have enough surplus money to be able to help with major social issues that are closest to my heart. My biggest personal goal related to that is I want to build 1 or more in city free long term housing that is also a drug treatment center for people in the Twin Cities dealing with chemical issues and other things. That one thing matters to me more than any other goal but I have to reach many goals before I ever reach that point. My mother battled with addiction for all of my childhood into my early 20s. She did get clean however it was plenty of pain from the things that came with her addiction over the years before she got clean. Losing her and my grandmother the same year shaped me in a way mentally that I have to use my pain to fuel my passion.
In 2018 I also lost my brother after he went missing in 2017 and his body was later found in a river in the East Coast. His body was decayed so bad he could only be identified by his teeth. Just another thing that fuels my already natural passion just that much more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
