Today we’d like to introduce you to Faye Nelson.
Hi Faye, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been in food service for over 30 years. It has been something that I’ve always loved doing. In about 2009, I decided I wanted to learn how to decorate cakes. So I did! Everything I’ve learned has been by reading, looking at photos and watching YouTube videos. My journey started with family and friends trying my baked goods and has blossomed into a great business! I became a Cottage Food Producer in MN so I could legally sell Food from my home. My business has grown so much that in December of 2021, I left my 6-2 job to do it from my home full-time. Currently, I am waiting to get a back approval from the MN Dept of Health to open my first bakery café!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This journey has been a long time in the making. I started planning my storefront in August of 2021. I was originally looking at a different location, but it soon became way too expensive. Luckily, there was another building a couple of stores down that became available. This was originally a cafe and a pizza place, so it had all of the requirements I needed in place. This significantly changed the amount I needed to borrow. Unfortunately, I did not have the down payment they were looking for, and could not secure the loan. Thankfully, an Angel investor believed in the idea and decided to help out with the financing. I also secured a loan with the local EDA.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve never thought of myself as an artist person, but it definitely comes out when I’m decorating cakes. I do a lot of kids’ Birthday cakes, along with retirement, adult birthday cakes, decorated sugar cookies and weddings. I also do a lot of cinnamon and caramel rolls. I think what sets me apart from everyone is the variety of items and baked goods I offer. A one stop shop if you will.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Happy customers! I love to be able to make people happy with something baked by me. When the little kid comes along to pick up their birthday cake and see it for the first time is the best! I love the reaction I get. It’s not about anything else, but that moment is when you know you’ve made something really special. It’s the look, the squeal, and overall excitement that tugs at your heart.
