Rising Stars: Meet Gabi Jones of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabi Jones.

Hi Gabi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started social media in 2020 as a senior in college getting my theatre degree (on zoom). I actually saw a listing on Backstage for 60 educational TikTok videos for $2000 and applied! I loved fashion history and I’d inherited a collection of over 800 pieces from my grandma so I decided to make educational videos about that, and within 2 months I’d hit 40k followers. I slowly expanded to other platforms and today I have over 2.5 million across platforms! It has opened so many doors for me, like my debut book “How to Dress Vintage” as well as touring my one-woman show “What we Wore” all about the things I’ve learned through my family’s clothes.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As in life, there was plenty of ups and downs! In 2021 my mom passed away and I got cheated on, but aside from life things, I think social media has a way of humbling you. I’ve had periods of intense self-doubt and embarrassment for pursuing social media, but at the end of the day, I think it’s the best job in the world and I couldn’t be more grateful to get to practice what I love (acting, writing, voiceovers, editing) while also learning and sharing about the power of vintage clothes!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create vintage fashion content on social media and I don’t necessarily think what I do is particularly special (other than the unique family element), but I just do it consistently! I also really try to show up and fail sometimes. I think the only thing that separates someone who’s really well known for something from someone who isn’t is time and a willingness to be in a “flop era”!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I LOVE the art scene and the food scene in Minnesota! Some of the most theaters in the country and some of the coolest people. That being said, there’s a lot of “etiquette” and unspoken expectations that Minnesotans can have that sometimes I feel like I never learned, therefore I’ve felt left out of community sometimes.
