Rising Stars: Meet Houston Davis of North Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Houston Davis

Houston, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
X.D. Media was established in 2018 but my 1st body of work was completed in 2019. I had a daughter on the way and had to decide between a video game system and a camera to have a hobby that can keep me busy at home. It started with freelance photography, mini documentaries, and recap videos then went to primarily music videos. I had to drive to Iowa to shoot my 1st music video for Daniel Sanchez (aka FlakGaza). In 2020, The George Floyd uprise and coronavirus outbreak changed my business unlike anything I’ve ever seen! Being a content creator became the most popular job in the World… I released over 100 projects each in 2020 and 2021 and those built my buzz and helped me become a “household name”. I’ve worked with 100+ celebrities / public figures, nonprofits, corporations, was lead production for an event ant Cinequipt, etc. I’ve also done filming and/or editing for a few local movies. I currently work at National Camera Exchange in Golden Valley, MN. I have a podcast studio location opening soon inside of a shop in North Minneapolis and a production studio location opening soon in North Loop. I currently shoot with a Sony FX3

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all! I almost quit a countless amount of times! 1 time, a laser beam from a club shot into my lens and burned a green spot into my sensor and it ruined my camera. At 1 video shoot (that I did for free), I left a $400 gimbal at the park. At another video shoot, I broke a different gimbal while trying to hurry and gather my equipment after getting kicked out of someone’s garage. During the George Floyd uprising, someone stole my computer while I was out helping the community. Almost everyone I trained became greedy or wanted to compete with me. I got the job at National Camera Exchange because it was hard to get anyone else to teach me anything. The people I looked up to started seeing themselves as rivals. A lot of people became “friends” with me to get favors and etc! These things make it less fun

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an employee at National camera exchange, I’m a sales associate in the Photofinishing department! We process orders for prints, film development, video transfer, and more! I’m also a “floater” so from time to time, I sell cameras / lenses, teach classes, build rigs, balance stabilizers, and so on. I’m also 1 of the video specialists as most of the other employees specialize in photo

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I don’t recall at the moment I can come back to this.
